Photo Essay

1> Why did you choose this topic? Why is it important to you?
I chose this topic because I am very interested in all things fashion and I am going into university for fashion design, where I create garments. This photo essay shows the outlining process of garment making.

2> What point of view or opinion did you hope to convey before beginning the shoot? What was involved in planning for and arranging this shoot?
Before beginning the shoot, the point of view that I wanted to convey was the point of view of the garment creator. For this shoot, I had to pick the most important steps of creating a garment. Then I chose locations, and where and what I will be photographing.

3> Describe the shoot. Did you have to change your plans? Did it go the way you had anticipated? Did you run into any problems? How did you solve them?
I went to Fabricland to take photos of the beginning stages of creating a garment. I used the lighting from the store and I wanted to portray the many choices the creator has to create a garment at the store. I did want to go to Toronto to go to Queen St where there are much more fabrics in a far more cramped space. However, due to transportation issues, I decided to go to Fabricland. Thankfully, I did not run into any problems. I was not sure if I could take photos at Fabricland, so I had to be very stealth.

4> Describe the feeling and message of your final chosen photographs. Do they convey the feeling and message you had hoped for?
The message I want to portray in my final photographs is that there are no limits when creating a garment. There are so many fabrics, colours, and materials that it's a lot of fun and very creative. Also I wanted to show how much work it is to create a garment. Although the final garment seems simple and not particularly labourous to complete, there are many steps to sewing. It is a lot harder than it looks, and precision and detail is key! It was hard to show the full message with the limit of 10 photographs, but I think I conveyed my message successfully the way I had hoped for. :)
